Bo Bat ancient pottery - The origin of Vietnamese pottery
There are many unique craft villages still remaining, contributing to the rich diversity of Viet Nam culture. One of the crafted villages is Bo Bat ancient pottery village, which is considered to be an early pottery village – ‘The ancestor" of Bat Trang pottery village today.

Ancient Bo Bat pottery village, Bach Lien village nowaday, belongs to Yen Thanh commune, Yen Mo district, Ninh Binh province, which is a famous craft village with many unique white ceramic products. There is a very rare type of clay called Bo Di. This type of clay only needs to burn 50-70% of the time compared to other types of clay but still ensures smoothness and hardness. Bo Bat pottery has thousands years of history. In Dinh and Tien Le dynasties, the talented craftsmen of the village created high-class products to offered to the king such as terracotta bricks "Dai Viet Quoc Quan Thanh Chuyen" - special bricks used to build citadels and ceramic products such as dishes, household items, etc.

According to historical records, when King Ly Thai To moved the capital to Dai La citadel, he brought along five big families of Bo Bat to build a new capital and produce ceramic products to serve the court and people. These artisans have settled in the land along the Red River, establishing the Bat Trang craft village today. Since then, the people of Bo Bat no longer retain the traditional craft.

Nowadays, along with the development of Ninh Binh tourism, the ancient traditional pottery of Bo Bat village also rose and developed. Pottery and porcelain products from Bo Bat are diverse, from household items such as teapots, dishes, vases to souvenir and decorative products such as wind chimes, necklaces, fine art pottery, etc. All products are exquisitely crafted. By the ingenuity of the craftsmen they have breathed soul for ceramic products.

In addition to other specialties and souvenir products, Bo Bat pottery products has become a gift of many visitors to Ninh Binh. Hopefully, Bo Bat will have further development steps, contributing to preserve the identity of the nation in general and Ninh Binh culture in particular.
